about

Debut release from Per Åsmund Omholt (57)

The traditional Norwegian folk tune «Vara ungkar og gå fri» has named this album which is now being released on the label Heilo (Grappa Musikkforlag). Per Åsmund Omholt, originally from Veme in Ringerike, releases his first solo album with Hardanger fiddle tunes in tradition after Truls Ørpen from Krødsherad. For many years he immersed himself in this material and used it as a basis for research and other dissemination. Finally, the opportunity to realize the music in a release has come.

Truls Ørpen was a central figure in the organized folk music scene in the first half of the 20th century. In his home village, Krødsherad, he learned from musicians born partly before the middle of the 19th century, and in that way gathered a large repertoire of traditional music used in the village. This older repertoire is well documented but has still not been used that much at competitions and concerts lately.

This production consists of mostly well-known tunes from the neighboring district, but some seem to be unique to the village and are probably unknown to most people. The tunes may seem a bit straightforward – the form is short and simple – but the they are rich in ornamentation and have tonal and sonorous shades which are in contrast to a lot of the material that is common today.

Per Åsmund Omholt works as a researcher and educator at the folk music program at Campus Rauland, USN. Here he teaches traditional play in Hardanger fiddle and sea flute, as well as music theory, cultural history, and social science subjects. The research has been particularly focused on studies of structure and tonality in Norwegian folk music.
